Formulation, adsorption performance, and mechanical integrity of triamine grafted binder-based mesoporous silica pellets for CO2 capture

This work explored the formation of mesoporous silicas pellets using a range bentonite and colloidal silica (LUDOX) fractions, aiming to optimise binder composition that minimises any deteriorating effects on adsorption performance, while providing adequate mechanical integrity. Thermogravimetric analysis, scanning electron microscopy, dynamic analysis were used structurally characterise pellets. Further, CO2 isotherms synthesised pellets, pre post triamine grafting, measured. Bentonite was found be an effective single forms mechanically strong retains up 85% capacity base adsorbent. In presence LUDOX, pellet hardness lower, led largest decrease in capacity. Formulation with 25% provide functionalisation equivalent powder SBA-15, at amine efficiency 0.41 mol CO2/mol, minimising pore blockage maintaining compressive strength 1.5 MPa.
